With the midterm elections now less than 50 days away, there are multiple indicators that Democrats should have some champagne chilling for the evening of Nov. 3.
Democrats’ lead on the generic congressional ballot is now more than 7 percentage points, according to election analyst Nate Silver’s polling average. That is flirting with the 9-point generic-ballot lead the political handicapping outlet Inside Elections says Democrats likely need to flip the Senate. Republicans are also reserving campaign ad time in districts that should not normally be competitive.
And now, with National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Democrats are seeing voter registrations surge all over the country, including in states with critical elections that could determine which party controls Congress.
For example, in North Carolina, Democrats outregistered Republicans in September by a 7,938-to-4,076 margin. That narrowed the GOP’s voter registration edge in the state, which plays host to a critical Senate contest that forecasters say Democrats are poised to flip.

In Pennsylvania—home to a number of key House contests—Democrats outregistered Republicans in the first two weeks of September by a margin of 15,405 to 6,352, expanding Democrats’ voter registration edge in the Keystone State.
In Iowa, where Democrats are looking to flip the governor’s mansion, its U.S. Senate seat, and as many as 3 U.S. House seats, Democrats in July outregistered Republicans 1,083 to 500.
And in Nebraska, whose Senate contest could be a sleeper race this cycle due to the negative economic impact Trump’s policies have had on the agricultural state, Democrats narrowly gained voters in August, while Republicans lost registrants overall.
This is a major reversal from 2024, when Democrats saw their voter registration edge evaporate—a trend that, in hindsight, was one of the first indicators that the cycle would be tough for Team Blue.
Ultimately, Democrats outregistering Republicans backs up Gallup polling that shows Democrats have a 10-point lead in what party voters say they identify with or lean toward. In the second quarter of 2026, 49% of Americans leaned toward the Democratic Party, while 39% leaned toward the GOP. That’s a major change from this time in 2024, when 46% leaned toward Republicans, while 44% said the same for Democrats.
It’s yet another data point that shows Democrats are poised for a big night in November.
